What are Free Chat Rooms? Where to Find AIM Chat Rooms

Free Chat Rooms

AOL has removed AIM Chat from AOL.com, AIM.com, and its AIM IM client due to a decrease in free chat now. However, you can still find AIM chat rooms using AOL Desktop Gold, an all-in-one service for managing email, instant messaging, and free chat rooms by browsing the web.

How to Find AIM Chat With AOL Desktop Gold

Before you can download and install AOL Desktop Gold, you’ll need to create an AOL user name if you don’t already have one. You don’t need to subscribe to AOL’s internet service to use the software. To find a chat room:

1. Log in to AOL Desktop Gold.

2. Select AOL Chat at the top of the screen.

3. Select Created by People Connection to browse rooms created by AOL, or select Created by AOL Members to browse rooms created by other AOL users.

4. Select a category from the left pane.

5. Double-click a room to start chatting.

From the AOL Chat screen, you can also choose Start Your Own Chat to make a new room that anyone can see under Created by AOL Members.

To find a specific chat room, type the name under Search All Chats by Topic and select Search.

To join a private chat room, select Enter or Start a Private Chat. Type the exact name of the private chat room you want to enter, or type an original name to start your own, then select Go Chat.

Private free chat now are not listed in the directory, so members will need to know the exact name of your room to join.

Chat Room Rules

AOL has policies that govern chat rooms, and the company requires members to agree to the policies when they create a screen name. The rules are related to the use of appropriate language, the distribution of content, and to several types of illegal activities, such as seeking personal information from minors. Read the complete list when you sign up.
